TEAGUES BRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL / FAMILY SUPPORT & WELLBEING

Caring for others.
Caring for you.

Some children do much more at home than people might realise. They may help look after a parent, brother, sister or another family member who needs additional care and support.

At Teagues Bridge, we recognise the important role young carers can play in their families. We also believe that every child deserves the time, encouragement and opportunities to enjoy being a child.

01 / UNDERSTANDING YOUNG CARERS

What is a young carer?

A young carer is a child or young person who helps care for a family member who has a disability, long-term illness, mental health difficulty or difficulties with alcohol or drugs.

Their responsibilities may include providing emotional support, helping with household tasks, assisting with personal care or taking on other responsibilities that would normally be carried out by an adult.

A MESSAGE TO YOUNG CARERS

You matter, too.

If you help look after someone at home, you can feel proud of the care you give. But you also deserve support, friendships, time to play and someone to talk to when things feel difficult.

02 / CARING RESPONSIBILITIES

Caring can look different in every family.

Not every young carer will have the same responsibilities. Some children may help occasionally, while others provide regular support in several different ways.

Practical help.

Cooking, cleaning, shopping, helping with laundry or carrying out everyday household tasks.

Personal care.

Helping someone get dressed, move around, wash or manage other personal care needs.

Health and medication.

Helping a family member remember medication, attend appointments or manage aspects of their health.

Emotional support.

Listening, offering reassurance, comforting someone who is upset or worrying about a family member's wellbeing.

03 / OUR SCHOOL COMMITMENT

Every child deserves to thrive.

We understand that caring responsibilities can sometimes affect a child's school experience. A young carer may feel tired, worried or distracted, or find it difficult to balance schoolwork, friendships and life at home.

Teagues Bridge Primary School recognises that young carers may need additional support to enjoy school and access the same educational opportunities as their classmates.

04 / WHEN TO ASK FOR SUPPORT

It's okay to ask for a little help.

Children may not always recognise themselves as young carers. They might simply feel that looking after someone is part of normal family life.

If caring responsibilities are affecting your child's wellbeing, attendance, schoolwork, friendships or time to relax, please speak to us. You don't need to have everything worked out before getting in touch.

FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

You can talk to someone at school.

If you're worried about someone at home, feel tired or have too many things to do, you can speak to a teacher or another adult you trust. You deserve help and support as well.
